What Actually Got Me Through the Newborn Stage

What Actually Got Me Through the Newborn Stage

Nobody prepares you for what the newborn stage actually feels like. The exhaustion is real, the love is overwhelming and the list of things you suddenly need at 2am is longer than anyone warned you about. This is not a list of things I was told to buy. This is the list of things that were sitting on my nightstand, in my diaper bag and within arm’s reach every single night for the first months of my youngest baby’s life.

If you are pregnant, newly postpartum or just deep in the trenches of the newborn stage right now, I hope this saves you some time, some stress and maybe a few middle of the night panic moments.

Here is what actually got us through.

1. Tommee Tippee Ultra Light Silicone Pacifier

I did not know how much I needed a good pacifier until I had one. This one was an absolute lifesaver from day one. The symmetrical one piece design means there is no wrong way to offer it which matters a lot when you are half asleep and fumbling in the dark. My baby took to it immediately and it became one of those things I made sure we always had multiples of. Soft, lightweight, BPA free and honestly one of the best purchases I made in the newborn stage.

2. Momcozy Baby Teether Toys

This one starts earning its place around the two month mark when your baby begins discovering their hands and wanting to chew on everything in sight. The food grade silicone is completely safe and the different textures keep baby genuinely engaged. We used ours constantly through the teething stage and it held up beautifully. One of those finds that grows with your baby from the early newborn days all the way through the six to twelve month mark.

3. Safety 1st Deluxe Baby Healthcare and Grooming Kit

This one deserves its own conversation because I genuinely cannot tell you how many times this kit saved us. Stores are closed at 2am. Your baby has a stuffy nose, a questionable temperature or nails that have somehow grown half an inch overnight and you have absolutely nothing to handle it with. This kit has everything. The thermometer, the nail file, the nasal aspirator, all twenty five pieces of it sitting right there ready for whatever middle of the night situation comes your way. Buy this before the baby comes and keep it on your nightstand. You will thank yourself.

4. Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow Anti Colic Bottles

When you are both breastfeeding and formula feeding you need a bottle that does not cause extra gas and fussiness on top of an already sensitive newborn belly. Our baby struggled with terrible gas and colic in the early weeks and switching to Dr. Brown’s made a noticeable difference. The internal vent system reduces the air intake that causes most of the discomfort and honestly the difference was significant enough that I recommend these to every new mom I know regardless of how they are feeding.

5. Little Remedies New Baby Essentials Kit

Speaking of gas and colic, this kit was a regular part of our routine from week one. The gas relief drops alone were worth the price of the whole kit. Add in the gripe water, the saline nasal spray and the diaper rash cream and you have a complete first aid setup for a newborn in one affordable package. Everything in here is safe for newborns which matters so much when you are navigating what you can and cannot give a brand new baby. Keep this one stocked. You will use all of it.

6. Bassinet Sheets 4 Pack

Here is something nobody talks about enough. You need more bassinet sheets than you think. Newborns are messy and the middle of the night sheet changes are real. Having four on rotation means you are never frantically searching for a clean sheet at 3am while a screaming baby waits. These fit a wide range of bassinet sizes, they are soft and they wash well. Simple, practical and completely essential.

7. Bright Starts Playful Paradise Baby Bouncer

The bouncer was one of those things I used occasionally but was incredibly grateful to have when I needed it. There are moments in the newborn stage where you desperately need both hands and a safe place to set your baby that is not the floor. The soothing vibration kept my baby calm long enough for me to eat a meal, take a shower or just take a breath. The toy bar provides just enough stimulation for those early weeks when everything is brand new and fascinating. Lightweight, easy to move from room to room and worth every penny.

8. Hatch Go Portable Sound Machine

If I could only recommend one thing on this entire list it would be this. The Hatch Go became non negotiable in our house from the very first week. White noise is genuinely one of the most effective soothing tools for newborns and having a portable version that clips onto the bassinet, stroller or car seat means the familiar sound travels with you wherever you go. Ten different sounds, ten hours of battery life and small enough to fit in a diaper bag. My baby sleeps so much more consistently with this running and the transition from bassinet to crib was so much smoother because the sound stayed the same.

9. Semphis 3 in 1 Baby Bassinet

Our baby slept in the bassinet from day one and having it right next to our bed made every single night feeding so much more manageable. The adjustable height meant it sat perfectly level with our mattress so I could check on the baby without getting up every single time. The rocking mode was helpful during fussier nights and the breathable mesh sides gave me so much peace of mind. Easy to assemble, easy to fold and the storage basket underneath became home to all our nighttime essentials. This one is genuinely worth every dollar.

10. Graco Modes Pramette Travel System

The travel system is one of those purchases you think about a lot before having a baby and then once you have it you wonder how you ever planned to manage without it. We used ours for walks, errands and outings and having the car seat click directly into the stroller without waking a sleeping baby is one of those things that sounds small until it saves you at least once a week. The Graco Modes Pramette is a solid reliable system that grows with your baby and works as a pram for newborns making it genuinely versatile from the very first day home from the hospital.

A Note From Me to You

The newborn stage is hard in ways that are difficult to fully explain until you are in it. The love is bigger than anything you have ever felt and the exhaustion matches it. My biggest hope in sharing this list is that it saves you even one middle of the night panic moment or makes one part of your day just a little bit easier.

You are doing an incredible job. Even on the days it does not feel like it.
